Park rangers at Zion National Park are asking anyone with information about the people who painted sandstones in the northwest corner of the park to come forward. Officials said that a day or two before July 8 vandals painted blue squares in an area about a mile south of the in the Kolob Terrace area. The squares measure 3 feet by 3 feet and officials think the graffiti is part of a “masonry or art project,” according to a news release. Jeff Axel, acting spokesperson for the park, said investigators suspect it was likely the former — and someone was trying to use the paint to capture the rocks’ texture. The release says that someone — perhaps who ever did it — has removed most of the paint, although some residue still remains and park crews will have to clean it. The release states that this sort of vandalism is “harmful and illegal.” “Repair of vandalized sites is costly and time-consuming. The staff often cannot restore sites and resources to their former condition,” the release states.
