 Monday, Aug 3rd 2020| At least eight people have been reported dead and 21 were injured as a result of a massive vehicle pileup on a highway that was blamed on a forest fire in .Authorities in the southern state of Paraná said the first accident on highway BR-277 occurred around 10:30pm Sunday when several cars stopped on the shoulder lane following a minor crash.A truck subsequently tried to avoid the vehicles and ran over four occupants, according to firefighters on the scene on the highway's 47-mile marker near the Rui Barbosa Avenue exit in the city of São José dos Pinhais.The collision sparked a chain reaction of crashes which involved 22 vehicles, including a police cruiser.Video uploaded to social media by motorists that drove by the deadly crash site showed several bodies lying on the ground. Authorities confirmed the accident was caused by poor visibility on the highway due to the level of smoke in the area after a roadside fire broke out.'The fires on the edge of the highways, they can generate this type of situation on any highway in the state of Paraná and Brazil,' Fire Brigade Colonel Samuel Prestes said. 'We are in a dry period. We have been warning this vehemently every day for the population to help us taking care of this situation. Our forest fire increased 78 per cent compared to last year.'  Seven of the victims died at the accident scene and an eighth person was declared dead at Cajuru Hospital. The Institute of Forensic Medicine said the dead included five women and three men.  Leonardo Barros Castro told Brazilian news outlet that he was sitting in his vehicle with his hazard lights on when a number of vehicles crashed.'I saw a motorcycle flying. They crashed because nobody was seeing anything because of the smoke,' Barros Castro said. 'We had to run out of the car in fear of death.
