Sacha Baron Cohen does not want to let Rudy Giuliani have the last word on the former New York City mayor’s embarrassing scene in the new sequel to Borat. On Thursday night, in character as the offensive journalist from Khazakstan, Cohen mock-defended “America’s mayor” against a rash of about Giuliani’s appearance in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.“What was an innocent sexytime encounter between a consenting man and my 15-year-old daughter have been turned into something disgusting by fake news media,” Cohen-as-Borat joked, before making an exaggerated and anti-Semitic hand gesture to give himself a longer nose.“I warn you. Anyone else try this, and Rudolph will not hesitate to reach into his legal briefs and whip out his subpoenas,” Cohen added, making sure the final word sounded as close to “penis” as possible.In the of Borat 2, which Amazon Prime Video released on Thursday night, Giuliani is interviewed by actress Maria Bakalova, who plays Borat’s daughter in the film and poses as a journalist to gain access to President Donald Trump’s personal attorney. After exchanging flirtatious banter with Bakalova—who in the film is supposed to be 15 years old but in reality is 24 years old (her age is not mentioned to Giuliani during the interview)—Giuliani and the actress retire to a hotel bedroom. Once there, hidden cameras capture Bakalova helping Giuliani remove his microphone. After its removal, the GOP operative lays back on the bed and puts his hands down his pants—which Giuliani has claimed was merely an attempt to fix his clothing. Before the scene goes any further, Cohen-as-Borat barges into the room and stops the encounter.“The Borat video is a complete fabrication. I was tucking in my shirt after taking off the recording equipment,” Giuliani on Twitter after the scene made headlines around the world. “At no time before, during, or after the interview was I ever inappropriate. If Sacha Baron Cohen implies otherwise he is a stone-cold liar.”In more-detailed defense of the scene, Giuliani during a radio interview that his behavior was not malicious in intent. “I had to take off the electronic equipment,” Giuliani said on Wednesday. “And when the electronic equipment came off, some of it was in the back and my shirt got a little out—came a little out—although my clothes were entirely on. I leaned back, and I tucked my shirt in, and at that point, at that point, they have this picture they take which looks doctored, but in any event, I’m tucking my shirt in. I assure you that’s all I was doing.”In an interview with Good Morning America broadcast Friday, however, Cohen, appearing out of character, Giuliani’s explanation. “I would say that if the president’s lawyer found what he did there appropriate behavior, then heaven knows what he’s done with other female journalists in hotel rooms,” Cohen said. “I just urge everyone to watch the movie. It is what it is. He did what he did. And make your own mind up. It was pretty clear to us.”In the interview, Cohen said he was “quite concerned” with the safety of Bakalova during the sequence, but was monitoring the scene from a specially built “hideaway” nearby.“It’s my responsibility as a producer as well to ensure that the lead actor is looked after,” he said.As for Bakalova, she said she always felt secure during the scene. “I’ve always felt safe with our team, with our crew, with Sacha in my corner,” she said. “I actually never felt that I’ve been in danger.
