Political Agenda

A skewed read of statistics for certain. "Immigration cases accounted for the largest single group of offenses in fiscal year 2018, comprising 34.4 percent of all reported cases." The article continues, making a poimt that if you look at ither criminal activity besides immigration issues, illegal immigrants commit many more Federal crimes than the average person. But the article totally seems to miss how Federal legal system works: once a person is booked (for immigration issues), police will look for any and every infraction that person has done, stacking the case against the person. I would be interested to read a more serious and unbiased statistical analysis of this, and perhaps use as a comparison Federal politicians Federal crime rates, and why not include big corporations as well? I can imagine someone saying, "You can't argue with these facts", but the presentation felt so manipulated and arbitrary.

This article might not falsify the stats, but it doesn't explain them which creates a tool to spread xenophobia and miss information.

National Bias

The article lays out some of the important statistics, but presented the way they are in this article creates a misleading sense that non-citizens commit almost half of the crimes committed in the U.S. These statistics are inflated because "Immigration cases accounted for the largest single group of offenses in fiscal year 2018, comprising 34.4 percent of all reported cases." So of course if you include immigration crimes, which are by definition committed by non-citizens and committed in large numbers, then it will appear that non-citizens are the biggest offenders. I would have liked to see this explained and unpacked more by the author, or to have seen more statistics that do include immigration crimes.

While this article may not present the narrative some wish to hear, the reality is that it does present valid information. Furthermore, the crimes committed still cost taxpayer money to incarcerate, process, adjudicate, and maintain. That money could be better spent managing other areas of necessity, and improving law enforcement training, among many other possible uses.
