But in many cases, teenagers are taking the vehicles to drive around in them for a while, then abandon them. Advertisement “Overall, the biggest spike we see right now is people taking cars, driving around for eight or 10 hours, then dumping the car,” Deenihan said. The increase in carjackings has been seen not just in Chicago, but the suburbs and nationwide, he said. “It’s everywhere,” Deenihan said. Often the robbers are minors, and aldermen called for prosecutors to crack down on those offenders so young people think there are significant consequences rather than just a slap on the wrist for carjackings. There have been 166 carjackings in Chicago so far in 2021, Deenihan said. Police have made 108 arrests, but 58 of those arrestees have been charged only with misdemeanor trespass to vehicle, he said. South Side Ald. Pat Dowell, 3rd, said criminals aren’t afraid of what will happen if they get caught carjacking someone. “I feel like we need another task force dealing on the prosecution side,” Dowell said. But Maryam Ahmad, chief of the Juvenile Justice Bureau for the Cook County state’s attorney’s office, said her office charges the cases the best they can, and usually gets convictions. Col. David Byrd of the Illinois State Police said that in some cases, young people steal cars so they can post videos online speeding in the stolen vehicles and evading police in order to impress friends. “There’s that social media aspect of it,” he said. Whatever the cause, South Side Ald. Greg Mitchell, 7th, said the rash of crimes is unprecedented in his neighborhood. “This carjacking is something out of a video game,” he said.
