It may not be the most important cold case in Queensland's history, but the theft of a video camera from an outback town 20 years ago has finally been solved.The camera was taken from Sharon Stretton's home in Mount Isa — it had been an expensive purchase for the then-20-something with young children.She reported the theft to police not expecting much of an outcome or to ever recover the camera's VHS tape, which contained precious home videos.Now, Hughenden police have recovered the very out-of-date camera [complete with case, tape and cords] and reunited it with Ms Stretton, who now lives in Gympie.Not surprisingly, she has no idea what to do with it or how to safely save the videos on the tape — which is still in the camera. Hughenden police station's administration and property officer, Kate Cusac, was the one to call Ms Stretton with the good news, and said the camera was found by someone claiming an abandoned public housing complex.When the 60-day claim period elapsed, Ms Cusac said she and the station's senior sergeant started putting their heads together to work out how to find the original owner."He sort of got his camera out and went through our system and he linked it to back an occurrence in 1998 in Mount Isa," she said."We tracked down the lady and …she was able to describe the camera to us and she was pretty excited about that."Ms Stretton said after more than 20 years she had definitely given up hope that the camera would ever return — and had almost forgotten about it entirely. "Not in a million years did I think it would come back," she laughed."It's in pristine condition which actually blows me away — that like, someone has obviously taken it, but it's still in its case, it still has all its leads, it doesn't even look like it has been used." Ms Stretton said that "back in the day" the camera, exceptionally large by today's standards, was a very expensive purchase for a young family. "Back in the day it was the bee's knees," Ms Stretton said."It was definitely one of the newest, like the newest thing, to have and we used to take it out to the station and use it all the time — you'd have to be young to carry this thing, it's huge." While there are no concrete plans for what to do with the recovered camera, Ms Stretton said one of her sons, now in his 20s, has been having a lot of fun with it.
