Staff members who may be at greater risk of serious illness due to the virus should be allowed to work remotely as much as possible, and students should stay in groups with the same teacher, avoiding interactions with other groups of students at recess and lunch.The SFUSD is at work on a classroom plan for the 2020-2021 school year, which is due to begin Aug. 17, though it's not yet clear whether schools will actually open. A decision is expected by July 28.“Reopening depends on us and how successfully we are able to control the spread of COVID-19,” said Mayor London Breed. “The next several weeks are critical. Gavin Newsom announced that the state has built up hospital surge capacity over the past four months and has the capacity to care for 50,000 COVID-19 patients.There are currently just under 8,000 COVID-19 hospitalizations statewide, but Newsom noted that figure has increased steadily over the past two weeks and could continue to worsen. State officials believe outbreaks at prisons and essential workplaces are driving the new hospitalizations, as well as increased mixing outside of households and not enough mask wearing and physical distancing in daily life.The 14-day average for percentage of positive tests statewide has climbed to 7.1%, a figure Newsom deemed concerning given the fact that the state was at 5% just a couple weeks ago. The governor has previously said the state is striving to keep that figure under 8%.Newsom also announced that the state has seen 11,694 newly confirmed cases over the past 24 hours — a new single-day record — but that dramatic figure is due to a backlog from the holiday weekend.June 8, 12:00 p.m. Another prisoner at San Quentin State Prison has died of COVID-19, increasing the prison's death toll to six.60-year-old David Reed, who was sentenced to death row for a racially motivated murder in 2004, was the most recent individual to die, officials announced Wednesday. There are over 1,300 cases at the prison.June 8, 10:40 a.m. Sonoma and Napa counties were added to the state watch list of counties with rising infection and hospitalization rates late Tuesday. This news isn't surprising, as county health officials warned earlier this week that cases were rising and they would likely be added to the state's monitoring program.According to the California Department of Public Health, Napa is experiencing elevated transmission due to family and community gathers and increased spread in particular "among the Latino population within crowded household settings and disproportionate impact on agricultural workers."While Sonoma isn't listed on the state's watch list posted online, Susan Gorin, the chair of the Board of Supervisors, told the the county is being added.The California Department of Public Health created the watch list to monitor counties that experience significant changes in COVID-19 infection rates, an increase in hospitalizations, outbreaks in congregate settings or a rise in community transmission at workplaces. Counties on the list are working with the state to identify the causes for any worrisome trends and next steps to mitigate the virus spread.The watch list posted online Wednesday features 26 counties.
