An Update on Synthetic Cannabinoid Research

An Update on Synthetic Cannabinoid Research

Synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonists (SCRAs) are a class of psychoactive substances (NPSs) that exhibit high affinity binding to the cannabinoid CB1 and CB2 receptors and are used as an alternative to the natural cannabinoid (-)-trans-Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC). SCRAs are marketed under brand names such as “K2” and “Spice” and are popular drugs of abuse among male teenagers and young adults. Typically, these products contain a mixture of SCRAs that are sprayed on dried plant material and marketed to suggest a similarity to cannabis. In addition to their desirable euphoric and...

PittCon 2023’s Vaping Symposium Confirms the Cannabis Industry Still Has Safety Concerns About Vaping Devices

PittCon 2023’s Vaping Symposium Confirms the Cannabis Industry Still Has Safety Concerns About Vaping Devices

I was an invited speaker at a recent cannabis vaping symposium being held at the 2023 Pittsburgh Conference in Philadelphia entitled Vaping – A Closer Look Behind the Smoke Screen. Dr. Eberhardt Kuhn from Shimadzu chaired the session and put together an impressive list of speakers covering many of the most pressing safety issues facing the vaping industry today. The session, which was almost four hours long, was extremely well attended considering PittCon is an analytical chemistry conference and not a cannabis-focused event. However, it was clear by the many questions and vigorous...

Tackling Cannabis Facility Design with Urban-Gro

Tackling Cannabis Facility Design with Urban-Gro

For every prospective cannabis cultivator, the first decisions to be made are on the cultivation facility itself. Whether to grow indoors or outdoors? How large should the facility be? Should it be a greenhouse? All of these are major points for consideration. To learn more about the services that are available to new cultivators setting up shop, Analytical Cannabis spoke with Arie Kamp, managing director at urban-gro Europe, a leading architectural and engineering firm that is already applying its design-build expertise to the cannabis industry. Controlled environment agriculture and...

How Controlling Cannabis Genetics Can Boost Crops

How Controlling Cannabis Genetics Can Boost Crops

Are you looking for new and novel genetics? The next great chemovar (strain) is being created right now by a small group of sophisticated breeders in effort to solve real agronomic problems and maybe even help hemp and cannabis farmers survive the great price collapse of 2022. Unfortunately, we don’t often get to read hopeful headlines because the THC Conspiracy (lab shopping) and Hop Latent Hysteria (the spread of the viroid among cannabis crops) have hijacked the cannabis industry news cycle for at least the past year. These issues could compromise the safety and effectiveness of products...

CBD and CBC Can Kill Head and Neck Cancer Cells, Study Finds

CBD and CBC Can Kill Head and Neck Cancer Cells, Study Finds

Cannabis extracts that are high in CBD can kill head and neck cancer cells, a new study has found. Published in Cancers, the study looked at the anti-tumor effects of 24 unique cannabis extracts on head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). The researchers found that CBD-dominant extracts could induce apoptosis and kill these cancer cells. Combining CBD with cannabichromene (CBC) in a 2:1 ratio made this effect even stronger. The researchers say that further research is still needed before developing products based on these findings. However, they believe their study suggests that the...
